Lanolin anhydrous is also known as wool wax or wool grease and is used by sheep to protect the wool and skin against environmental factors and keep the skin clean. Lanolin forms an oil barrier that traps and maintains moisture within the skin and is extensively used in creams for dry itchy skin and, more recently, in hair conditioners.
Beeswax is a secreted clear oily solution used by worker bees to build the honeycomb cells. It has a very rich composition, containing over 300 different molecules. It mainly contains alcohol esters, fatty acids and sugars as well as a significant quality of vitamin A. It is used extensively in products for dry skin due to its softening, emulsifying and protective properties.
Rosehip oil is rich in essential fatty acids, including linoleic and linolenic acids, which help maintain the skin's natural barrier and prevent moisture loss. The retinoids and fatty acids support skin regeneration and healing which can help reduce the appearance of scars, including acne scars, stretch marks and surgical scars.
A study in the Clinical Microbiology Reviews highlight the antimicrobial potential of eucalyptus oil against respiratory pathogens. Eucalyptus has also been scientifically researched to reduce nasal congestion and improve airflow. Eucalyptol (1,8-Cineole) is the primary active, scientifically researched for its decongestant and mucus thinning properties. It works by reducing inflammation and mucus production in the respiratory tract. The leaves have been used for centuries by Australian Aboriginal people for their antiseptic and healing properties.
In various cultures, pine needles were boiled to produce steam for inhalation, which helps clear nasal passages and support chests clogged with stubborn mucus. Alpha-pinenes and beta-pinenes are the key properties with those anti-inflammatory and broncodilator effects. A study published in the Journal of Clinical Biochemistry and Nutrition highlighted pine oil’s antimicrobial properties.
Rosemary contains rosmarinic acid, an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compound that helps soothe irritation in the airways. It also contains cineoles, a compound with mucus thinning and antimicrobial properties, which supports clear airways and fighting infection. Rosemary leaves contain around 0.05 to 0.5% camphor, which support its use as a decongestant and expectorant.
