Wild Cherry Bark
Wild Cherry Bark
Prunus serotina

Traditionally used in cough syrups to suppress dry, hacking coughs, dry mucus and as a mild sedative. The bark contains cyanogenic glycosides that are converted in the body to prussic acid. This acid is excreted through the lungs where it first increases respiration then sedates the sensory nerves responsible for the cough reflex.

Marshmallow
Marshmallow
Althea officinalis

Marshmallow is most commonly used to ease sore throats and dry coughs. It contains polysaccharides that work as a mucilage, producing a thick, sticky substance that coats the mucuous membranes. The flavonoids in Marshmallow contain anti-inflammatory properties that soothe irritated membranes. In Russia, the root syrup is sold without prescription by pharmacies to treat minor respiratory ailments.

Licorice
Licorice
Glycyrrhiza glabra

One of the most widely used and trusted herbs in traditional medicine, licorice is also available in Germany as an over-the-counter medicine. It contains glycyrrhizin, reported to have anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial activities as well as being up to 50 times sweeter than cane sugar. It is also reported to promote a healthy adrenal response to stress. Used for respiratory infections, digestion and healthy mood.
