A member of the plantain family, Ribwort grows widely in many countries as a weed but is highly edible. Commonly used for its anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties, especially to reduce inflammation of mucous membranes such as sinuses, nasal passages, throat and lungs. It also reduces production of mucus so is a useful herb in cases of congestion of the sinuses, ears and airways.
The flowers of Sambucus nigra are rich in flavonoids and antioxidants which support the immune system, especially in its fight against respiratory symptoms associated with ills and chills. It is traditionally used to support healthy sinuses; especially where sinuses are inflamed. Elder flower is often used to help dry up secretions and excessive mucus.
The isothiocyanates in horseradish help break down mucus and clear airways. Scientific research shows these compounds also have broad spectrum antimicrobial effects against various bacteria commonly found in the respiratory tract. A study in Journal of Applied Microbiology highlighted the effectiveness of these compounds in inhibiting the growth of respiratory pathogens.
